ADHD Close-up: Infancy Through Kindergarten

This high-level training experience will upgrade your knowledge of many components of the overall symptom picture of infants and toddlers who have ADHD. Too many professionals and parents mistakenly believe that (1) children who have inherited ADHD don’t show symptoms until kindergarten or later, (2) the brain is the only organ that is impaired, (3) diagnosis should await school age of about 6 years old, and (4) pharmaceuticals are the best way to treat ADHD at all ages, (5) until the child attains that age, nothing else can be done to reduce ADHD symptoms except “behavior modification” by parents and teachers. None of these beliefs is accurate. The truth is far more complex, and this webinar details some of the correlates and indicators of ADHD during infancy and the preschool years, as well as viable treatment options prior to age six.

Dr. Taylor explains in detail the four major symptom clusters of ADHD in plain terms that de-mystify the standard diagnostic terminology and commonly employed technical jargon that cause so much confusion about this condition. You will learn how malfunctioning of at least four other organ systems play significant roles to magnify the symptoms and worsen the young child’s behavior.

Evidence of the strong influence of genetics on ADHD symptoms is apparent among grandparents, siblings, parents, aunts and uncles. You will learn about these telltale indicators that so often appear in the gene pool background of children born with ADHD. Dr. Taylor will also detail the gradual worsening of symptoms that often occurs in the preschool years and the many ways young children with ADHD are different from their peers by the time they enter grade school.

The author and producer of over 200 professional journal articles, newspaper and journal columns, books, video DVDs, audio CDs and booklets, Dr. Taylor is perhaps best known for his landmark parent-teacher-counselor guidebook ”Helping Your ADD Child,” his best-selling “The Survival Guide for Kids with ADHD.” and his definitive parenting guidebook about oppositional and defiant children and teens “From Defiance to Cooperation.”

His publications for professionals have included numerous articles in professional journals, and books including “Diagnostic Interviewing of the Misbehaving Child,” “Understanding Misbehavior,” and “Anger Control Training for Children and Teens.” Dr. Taylor has been a psychology instructor at UT-Chattanooga and two community colleges.
